Good News and Bad News in the Allergy Department

Friday I took both kids to the allergist.  As most people who read this blog know, Carrie has had a peanut and egg allergy.  Andrew had an allergic reaction to hummus of all things, so I thought I better get him checked out too. They gave both children skin tests, although they didn't even bother testing Carrie for peanuts since a recent blood test confirmed she was still allergic.

Imagine my surprise when the skin next to the "peanut" spot hived out the size of a quarter for Andrew.  UGH! How is this possible to have TWO children with peanut allergies?  I am blaming the asthma/allergy medicine I took during both pregnancies!

In addition to a peanut allergy, he is also allergic to walnuts, and, believe it or not, GARLIC! I had assumed that he must be allergic to either chickpeas or sesame which are both in hummus, and when did not respond to either of those, they tested him for garlic and he hived out in seconds.

So we will now have 3 sets of Epipens at our house! This could get expensive.

The good news is that Carrie is no longer allergic to eggs, so we have had an egg festival this weekend.  Saturday we tried scrambled eggs (see below).  She liked them OK but I think the build up far exceeded the actual experience for her!  Today, we had poached eggs (Mommy's favorite).  She seems to prefer scrambled so far!

I have a kiddo with allergies too... blame genetics not your medicine taking habits during pregnancy. At least you have a menu you can count on! I have quickly become used to no red meat [me]no shellfish [matt] and no nuts, soy, or tomato/eggplant/pepper [brooke]. You'll get used to it; its the restaurant experience that gets interesting....
